If you're looking for a great deal on a basic home tool set, it's hard to beat this collection from Allied. In fact, the 16-ounce hammer alone is nearly worth the price of the whole set; add all the other tools and you've got a real bargain. We were impressed with the quality of the needle-nose and slip-joint pliers. Not only are they well made, they both also come with soft-handle grips more commonly found on higher-end tools. Also included is a magnetic screwdriver with 10 bits, a 6-inch adjustable wrench, 8 hex wrenches, a 3/8-drive ratchet with a 3-inch extension bar, and a socket set. The socket set also includes 14 standard sockets and 6 metric sockets. To round out the collection Allied has thrown in a decent utility knife, a 12-foot tape measure, and a torpedo level. Unfortunately, the tape measure and level are not the same quality as the rest of the tools in the kit and look like toys in comparison. But despite the laughable tape measure and level, one could easily spend a whole lot more trying to buy this same collection of tools separately, and the quality of the majority of them is well worth it. This is a great set for repairs around the house, but consider a larger set with combination wrenches if you plan on doing much automotive work. --Brian Trinen
